The Alpcour Bike Trainer: why you’ll be as impressed as we were…

So, when bike trainer season hits us every year, we always end up on the lookout for an awesome new trainer to take our training to the next level. We recently came across the Alpcour bike trainer, and have to say, it ticks all the right boxes – and then some!

Coming in at around $160 (you might be able to sneak in a bit of a discount over Black Friday or in the run up to Christmas, so keep your eyes peeled!), this isn’t one of the cheapest trainers we’ve ever checked out, but it certainly offers some great value with some superb features.

This indoor trainer will turn your off-road mountain bike into a stationary bike within minutes, and yes, it will save you trekking down to the gym or suffering out on the road during the winter season (and yes, could well make our BEST OF THE YEAR list which we update annually – check out the current list here). It also has over 800 five star reviews on Amazon – not something to sneeze at!

The Alpcour bike trainer: FIVE things we really liked

This trainer has a lot about it to like, but these are FIVE things we really liked:

  • The unit seems very sturdy and it was particularly easy to adjust the wheel gizmo that controls the resistance and stability.
  • We love being mobile and taking a trainer or two on our travels, so the Alpcour trainer especially hit the sweet spot with its ability to fold up pretty flat. It also comes with a decent bag to store/carry it.
  • The magnetic flywheel with its 6 levels of resistance (which are accessed via the controller which clamps easily onto your handlebar) provides the perfect ride for cadence as well as a solid workout.
  • Thanks to Amazon’s awesome service, it shipped quickly and was soon on my front porch – exactly as described. It was very easy to assemble – and the front wheel stand is definitely a bonus (as they can typically set you back an additional $20).
  • It is pretty darned quiet – perfect if you need a session while listening to the radio or watching your favourite Netflix show while you ride.

Something about the Alpcour trainer we didn’t like…

Some reviewers have complained about the noise on this trainer, but if you look closely at their comments, they’re typically riding a mountain bike with knobbly tires. A quick change to a training slick, and you’re sorted.

What did disappoint us slightly was the wear and tear on our tires. Again, it could be down to the wrong tire, or perhaps a tweak is needed to adjust the flywheel when it rubs against the tire. Something to watch out for perhaps.

So, is the Alpcour trainer a buy…or an ABSOLUTE MUST buy?

In our opinion, when we look at what this Alpcour bike trainer offers in comparison to some of the famous old stalwarts out there (think: Cycleops Fluid 2 and the Road Machine), it’s an ABSOLUTE steal. A very decent magnetic trainer, with good levels of resistance, easy to setup, quiet, and easily stored…you can’t really ask for much more. Add it to your training program now!
