What we liked about this budget-friendly trainer

Magnetic resistance trainers like this model are quite popular among cyclists because of the steady resistance they provide. No matter how hard you train and how long it takes you to finish your workout, the trainer will provide you with decent, steady resistance. Subsequently, expect some decent conditioning when training for sprints and uphill climbs that require good cycling form and endurance.

This magnetic resistance trainer from RAD is a little bit noisy, but it its seven levels of resistance are guaranteed to give you a good workout that will improve your stamina and hone those muscles.

You can use it on road and mountain bikes with 26”, 27”, and 700c wheels. To set it up, just unfold and put the bike in place, and then tighten the axle holder. We’d recommend using a front riser block (typically around $15) to keep the bike level, otherwise you’ll be heading downhill all session, and face some lower back pain at some point, guaranteed!

You can easily fit this trainer to your favorite bike, set the resistance to the level that you want, and start your workout – it’s that easy. You can also progressively increase the resistance as you do your workout for maximum endurance training. After your workout, use the quick release system to detach your bike, quickly and smoothly.

Main features of the RAD Cycle Products MAX Racer

  • The seven resistance levels provide you with enough power to enhance those strong leg muscles of yours.
  • The trainer is equipped with a front wheel anti-slip pad that stabilizes the setup.
  • It is lightweight and folds easily for transport or storage. But even though it’s light, it’s still very sturdy and should last you years.
  • You can use it with road and mountain bikes that sport 700c, 26”, and 27” wheels.
  • It is easy to set up and take off the bike.
  • It’s VERY affordable.

Things you need to consider when looking at this trainer

There’s not a lot to dislike about this trainer, which is a bit of a surprise when you factor in its price. One thing we didn’t like was a very slight change in the resistance as you shift levels (it is probably better to just use the bike gears to increase resistance than to turn the resistance control knob).

Another tip for the top, if you want a quieter ride: change your rear slicks to a trainer slick if you’re on a mountain bike. The knobbly thread will drown you in noise…

So, do you get some bang for your buck?

Yes!

The price of this trainer, coupled with the quality of training, and product durability you get, are excellent factors that make it worthwhile for those of you looking for a decent trainer at a very decent price. You can’t really go wrong with this one, since you will get your money’s worth through the excellent conditioning and workout that the seven resistance levels provide. So yes, recommended (and verified by its numerous 5 star ratings on Amazon!).

By the way, we reviewed the RAD’s sister product, the RAD Indoor Mag Trainer. If we had to choose between the two, we’d have to stay with this one, the RAD Cycle MAX.
